This is what the web should really be about. Connecting us to each other. Helping us share our knowledge. Finding efficient ways to support causes and organizations in need. Greatest Good fosters all three.
Created by the innovative Saneel Radia, with some help from a lot of friends, this early stage site aims to connect you with a slew of smart and accomplished folks from tech, media and marketing. For a small fee they’ll consult, advise or share their insights with you in a half hour or hour-long video session via Google Hangouts. Best of all, the money, typically $150.00 for a 30 minute session, goes to a worthy charity selected by the expert advisor.
Pretty nifty. You get 30 minutes with the likes of Rishad Tobaccowala, chairman of DigitasLBi and Razorfish; Emma Cookson, chairman of Bartle Bogle Hegarty NY; Andrew Essex, the co-founder of Droga5; and soon the prolific and influential Maria Popova, the force behind Brain Pickings, all of whom donate their time and knowledge.
Whether you’re interested in starting a company, raising venture capital, positioning a product, developing a growth strategy, working with data, improving user experience or any of a host of other topics, you’ll find someone who’s been there/done that. You can filter by advisor or by 50 different areas of expertise. And you can see exactly what charity will benefit from your fee/donation.
My guess is that most of these folks bill at an hourly rate far in excess of what you’ll pay. And certainly, if you’re smart with the questions you ask, the value you can take away from a conversation could far exceed the modest charge.
Take a look at the talent Greatest Good has collected. And the charities each person supports. It’s both impressive and inspiring.
Then find someone who can help with your business, your product or your career and give it a try.
If you want, you can even book me. I may share a lot of ideas and experience for free, here and on other platforms, but it’s usually what I feel like talking about. With Greatest Good, I can focus entirely on what you want to talk about.
Here’s what I can help you with
Topics that I like — and actually know something about — include agency management and change, how to foster a culture of innovation, digital strategy and content creation, brand strategy and positioning, creative direction, social media marketing. I can also offer advice on career management, how to hire an ad agency, talent retention and basically anything that relates to building and growing a creative company.
Here’s who you’ll be helping
There are lots of great causes on Greatest Good. Mine is Cycle Kids. It’s cycling based — surprise — but it’s really about fighting the growing obesity among America’s youth, introducing school age children to exercise and nutrition, and elevating confidence and self esteem among the inner city kids that the program primarily serves. Your $150 may or may not actually save a life, but it will help reduce the skyrocketing costs of health care. One kid at a time.
I hope you’ll check out Greatest Good, pass it on, and guide your friends and colleagues to the wisdom that resides there. It’s a great idea with a real purpose.
