Great recap. I recommend anyone going to SXSW next year should tag along with you, Edward. You display a knack for finding the best ideas on the ground.

I know I left an awful lot out, Shirky's focus on civic responsibility, many of Danah's other big questions, etc. Jaron was great. What was that "computer" he was playing music on? His book is quite thought provoking; just wish he were as cogent as Clay. Also, important to note that all of these folks, like everyone out there, has their message to pitch: their own brands depend on their unique spin, so by definition they each have to carve out an argument. Agree that the bigger talks, these and perhaps Messina on activity streams, were among the best. At least of the ones I attended.

I searched for the videos of these talks online but could not find. Will add links if I do. Most interesting conversation (or maybe just monologs so far) is between the critics (Rushkoff) and the apparent advocates (Shirky). Two sides of an emerging argument as to whether the platforms that unite us, enable sharing and put power in the hands of individuals are good, bad, or somewhere in between.

Thanks for the recap Edward. These are always my favorite types of sessions at the show. While some lament the "hit or miss" aspect of the panels, I'll take that with the opportunity to have such a wide range of diverse-deep thinkers. Jaron was my favorite, while Danah really challanged me to thnk more viscerally about human reaction when thinking about social engagement.

Thank you for posting this first round of sxsw recap. Even though I was unable to attend, I did feel as if I was living vicariously through you, Ben and Tim and several others who I follow. So my gratitude for your ongoing sharing and reporting. The other person who I'm sure you'll get discussing is Len Kendall. His visual/infographic method of documenting and storytelling is certainly engaging as well as inspiring.
