I asked four of my strategy students, all women, to weigh on the Barbie Sports Illustrated story this week. Here are their comments. Well expressed.
@edwardboches Came over here after reading your Cadillac post. Seems like you have some woman in your class that will go places. One of the points I found interesting: "But if the brand wants her to be representative of women's career opportunities, then to put her on the cover of a magazine famed for its sexualizing display of women gives the impression that her beauty is her only ticket to success." What if she was on the cover of Sports Illustrated and Harvard Business Review in the same month? Maybe show the covers before they go to press and ask prominent woman to provide their thoughts on their blogs. Might be interesting hear some thoughts on that modified approach from your future brand strategy gurus. And the answer to your unasked question is yes, I am procrastinating from doing some real work this morning....
