Ad Age called me a social media guru

guru_nanak_os07I’m a social media activator
A social media prognosticator

But am I a social media guru?
The answer to that one’s a definite noo

I’m a social media doctor
On occasion an imposter

But am I a social media guru?
I’m telling you it just ain’t true

Been a social media analyst
And a social media panelist

But am I a social media guru?
Of course I’m not.  And neither are you.

Maybe it’s just that I’ve never wanted to be a member of any club that would have me as a member.  But based on what I’ve seen of people who actually label themselves social media “gurus,” I can tell you I don’t want to be one of them.  So, even though Ad Age, no doubt out of sincerity, bestowed that label on me this week, pay them no heed.  I’m just out here trying to do the same thing you’re doing.  Listening, learning, sharing, connecting.  Sorry for the lame thyme.  Was easier than writing a real post.

I'm just a social media dickhead ;).

(Unfortunately or fortunately this has yet to be mentioned in AdAge)

How should I read this? As a rock song or as ABAB iambic pentameter? I'm thinking rock song.

Congrats on the Zappos account :)

It I were younger and hipper it could have been rap. Thanks on Zappos. Crazy to go from 100 agencies to one. But as my partner just reminded me, competition yields and excess of productivity. We go up against bad odds because we have the illusion of success, based on the fact that someone has to win and you can't unless you try. So who knows, maybe the odds pushed us harder. Not to mention if you have any interest in social media how could you not want to have Zappos as a client, even if they're coming to you for traditional advertising, too.

Edward -- I understand your desire to remain humble but from what I've read, your ideas stick with me more than most. Being an expert in social media means your ahead of a curve that is just starting to turn upward.

Bruce:
That's a great compliment. Thank you. If that's the case I am glad to hear it. I think that all this new stuff makes you want to learn, and think, and try new things. Everything is changing, from marketing to creativity. Experimentation and imagination are the only two assets you need. The technology is free, the community willing to share, and the conversation there for the listening. Glad you like what you find here.

Love it. Cheers, Edward!

Edward, you may not be a Social Media Guru, but you're kind of a big deal.

I prefer to think of myself as a perpetual social media student, because there's always something new to learn!

People are only big deals in their own mind. Interestingly, the thing I love about social media is that anyone can be a someone. It's about the quality of your ideas, not how long you been around or what your title is. Any anyone can call anyone out. There's more of a willingness for people to judge each other fairly. As I have said many times, I learn a lot more from people here than vica versa.
